The Biblioteca Ramon Bordas i Estragués, the public library in Castelló d'Empúries, is restarting its reading clubs this autumn after the summer break. The new season covers comics, fiction, theatre and young readers, with visits from several authors and two theatre trips to Barcelona.
Each club is run by a dedicated facilitator. The programme is built around shared reading and group discussion.
Comics club opens the season
The comics reading club is the first to return. It has been running for more than twelve years and meets once a quarter.
Its first session is on 8 October and will look at Los combates cotidianos by French cartoonist Manu Larcenet. Ovídia Barneo, who has led the club since it began, will continue to run the meetings.
Castelló d'Empúries will host an escape room on Saturday 3 October that brings grandparents, children and families together to solve puzzles as a team. The activity, called Els exploradors de l'edat perduda (The Explorers of the Lost Age), also aims to challenge stereotypes about age.
The game is organised by the Fundació Privada Hospital de Santa Llúcia de Castelló d'Empúries, a private foundation linked to the town's historic Santa Llúcia hospital. It is run with the support of Castelló d'Empúries town council, the Ajuntament, and the Fundació "la Caixa", the charitable foundation connected to the Catalan banking group.
The cheese fair in Lladó has reached its third decade. On Sunday, the village's Plaça Major and the streets of its old centre once again filled with stalls, drawing visitors with an interest in artisan cheese.
Lladó is a small inland municipality in the Alt Empordà, the county that also includes Empuriabrava and Castelló d'Empúries. Its cheese fair has now been running for three decades.
25 cheesemakers from across Catalonia
This year's edition brought together 25 artisan cheesemakers from different parts of Catalonia. Between them they offered cheeses made from four types of milk: cow, goat, sheep and buffalo.
Buffalo milk is the least familiar of the four for many visitors. It sat on the stalls alongside the more traditional cow, goat and sheep varieties.
The Mostra del Vi de l'Empordà, the Empordà wine fair in Figueres, will feature 11 wineries this year, three more than in 2025. It is the fair's 40th edition. For the first time it will share a single space with the Fòrum Gastronòmic Ciutat, the town's food forum, on the Rambla from 2 to 4 October.
All participating wineries belong to the DO Empordà, the denominació d'origen (protected designation of origin) that certifies wines from the area. The list is Celler Cooperatiu d'Espolla, La Vinyeta (Mollet de Peralada), Mas Llunes and Masetplana (Garriguella), Espelt Viticultors (Vilajuïga), Pere Guardiola (Capmany), AV Bodeguers (Vilamaniscle), Terra Remota (Sant Climent Sescebes), Empordàlia (Vilajuïga/Pau), Vinyes dels Aspres (Cantallops) and Mas Vida (Cistella).
Roses will host the eighth edition of its Craft Beer and Music Fair from Friday 9 to Sunday 11 October, with five independent breweries, live bands and DJ sessions over three days.
The event mixes beer tastings with concerts. It also offers a popular lunch on the final day.
Five breweries, three from the Alt Empordà
Five craft brewers will pour their beers at this year's fair. Three are based in the Alt Empordà, the county that includes Roses, Figueres and Castelló d'Empúries. These are Cervesa de Roses, from the host town, Cervesa No T'enfadis from Figueres and Cervesa Cadaqués from the coastal village of the same name.
