Patí a Vela European Cup comes to the Bay of Roses
The Bay of Roses will host the 2026 Patí a Vela European Cup next week. Club de Vela La Ballena Alegre in Sant Pere Pescador will stage the event from Friday 9 to Monday 12 October.
The competition will bring together sailors in both the Senior and Junior categories. Over four days, the waters off the club will become a meeting point for this class of sailing, which has close ties to Catalonia's nautical culture.
A Catalan sailing tradition
Patí a Vela is a sailing discipline deeply rooted in Catalonia. Readers who have spent time along the Catalan coast may know it as one of the region's most traditional forms of small-boat racing.
Hosting a European Cup means the Alt Empordà will welcome a field of competitors from the Senior and Junior ranks. The racing will take place in the Bay of Roses, the wide stretch of water that runs from Roses past Empuriabrava and down towards Sant Pere Pescador and L'Escala.
Who is behind the event
Two bodies are organising the regatta. One is the host club, Club de Vela La Ballena Alegre. The other is the International Patí a Vela Association, known by its Spanish acronym ADIPAV, which oversees the class.
Several other bodies are also backing the event. The Catalan Sailing Federation (Federació Catalana de Vela) and the Royal Spanish Sailing Federation (Real Federación Española de Vela) are both collaborating. Other organisations linked to sport and to promoting the local area are also involved.
Part of a longer plan
The European Cup is not a one-off for the club. It forms part of a wider project at La Ballena Alegre with three main aims. The first is to strengthen the sport at grassroots level. The second is to encourage a new generation of sailors to take up the class. The third is to raise the international profile of Patí a Vela.
The project began in September 2025. That month, the club organised a Junior Patí clinic and hosted the Spanish Championship. The European Cup is the next step in that plan.
Base at La Ballena Alegre
The club's facilities at La Ballena Alegre, facing the Bay of Roses, will serve as the base for the competition. Accommodation for participants will also be concentrated there, along with the activities linked to the event.
Keeping racing, lodging and side events in one place should make the regatta easier to follow for sailors and their teams. It also means visitors who want to watch will find everything in Sant Pere Pescador.
Racing on local waters
The European Cup adds to a busy autumn for sailing in the bay. Only recently, Roses hosted the second phase of the Interclubs Empordà regatta. Taken together, the two events show how active the local sailing scene remains after the summer season ends.
Why It Matters
For readers in Empuriabrava and Castelló d'Empúries, this event takes place almost on the doorstep. The Bay of Roses is shared water, and a European-level competition there puts the whole coastline in front of an international sailing audience.
The timing is also worth noting. October falls outside the peak summer months. Events like this suggest that clubs around the bay are trying to give the area a sporting calendar that extends beyond July and August. This fits with wider efforts on the Costa Brava to attract visitors outside the high season.
The club's focus on Junior sailors and on passing the sport to a new generation may matter as much as the results. Having hosted a Spanish Championship in 2025 and a European Cup in 2026, La Ballena Alegre appears to be building a track record as a venue. It is worth watching whether this leads to more international regattas in the bay in the coming years, and whether local young sailors start to take up the class.
